She was prevented by the Burmese military rulers from becoming Prime Minister after the NLD's overwhelming victory in the 1990 elections. Her most recent house arrest detention order was set to expire at the end of May 2009, but she was rearrested on May 14, 2009, following the unwanted intrusion into her home by an American who swam across Inya Lake in Rangoon to visit her. She was charged with violating the terms of her house arrest, which on August 11, 2009 was extended for another 18 months, thereby preventing her from taking part in the November 7, 2010 elections. Her release on November 13, 2010 led to renewed calls to free all the remaining political prisoners in Burma.
