Jane sings "Aung San Suu Kyi"
19 June 2008, Aung San Suu Kyi is 63 ans.

She has consequently spent 12 out of the last 18 years of her life imprisoned or under house arrest, most of the time cut off from the rest the world by the Burmese junta. Her party (the National League for Democracy), won the elections in 1990. However, this was ignored by the ruling military junta which kept power systematically and heavily violating the human rights. They have forced the Burmese to live under threat and fear.

Appalled by the repression of the monks and of the Burmese people in 2007, Jane Birkin wrote this song and has interpreted it on stages across the world ever since. The singer has just finished the studio recording of this call in favour of Aung San Suu Kyi. The text is based on information published by Amnesty International. Music is by Franck Eulry, lyrics by Jane Birkin and the clip is directed by Jeremiah.

Aung San Suu Kyi remains under house arrest for another year.

The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) strongly condemned the decision of the Burmese military junta to extend the house arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi, 1991 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and leader of the Burmese opposition. FIDH called the Burmese authorities to put an end to the harsh repression of political opponents and to immediately release all political prisoners. (Read more)
